U.S. Department of Justice officials have returned to the McCracken County Regional Jail this week for a follow-up visit on conditions and practices at the jail.

An environmental inspector, who looks at everything from the cafeteria to the laundry area, made a one-day visit Monday, said County Administrator Steve Doolittle.

Also arriving Monday was medical specialist Dr. Joseph Fowlkes. He is expected to spend two days at the jail. A corrections specialist is also expected to stay two days.

The medical area has seen many improvements in the seven years the Justice Department has been involved with the jail, Doolittle said.

In January 2001, in an effort to avoid a lawsuit, the county entered into a 30-page agreement to comply with specified conditions. The agreement included 14 pages related to the physical and mental health of inmates.

The last visit by the federal officials was in August 2004.
