Courthouse and Jail mural

McCracken County's first courthouse and jail are depicted in a Robert Dafford painting on Paducah's floodwall. The log jail is at the rear of the courthouse and was built in 1827 and is the first county building built at Wilmington which was the first county seat. The jail was built by James Martin, who was also the county's first Sheriff, for the cost of $398. The courthouse wasn't built until 1830. Wilmington was abandoned in 1832 due to flooding which is depicted in the painting and the jail was the last building to be torn down. A new log jail was built on 2nd street at the rear of a new two story brick courthouse when county government moved to Paducah.
